Do Your Homework When You Are Hiring A Home Health Care Nurse
With busy work schedules and other obligations demanding our time in this fast-moving world, the call for the services of a home health care nurse is highly prevalent. There is a vast number of elderly and sometimes younger people who find themselves in dire need of health care services. It is far less expensive to have a home health care nurse than to opt for a nursing home facility to take care of your relative’s long term care. A home health care nurse can care for a variety of different patients with different needs. They are well educated in observing a patient’s individual needs and are trained in assessment of the patient’s environment. They can keep a close watch on the patient’s condition, they can advise the patient in regards to their illness and they are licensed to mediate the patient. It is of utmost importance that a home health care nurse has a certain degree of compassion. If the nurse you hire seems cold and indifferent toward the patient, there is probably a chance that you have hired the wrong person. Now unless you are below the poverty level and have Medicaid or Medicare or the patient has a long term care policy, you will have out of pocket expenses. A registered nurse or LPN is more expensive than a home health aide. However, the aide is not as skilled. An aide can help with feeding the patient or clothing the patient. For these activities of daily living tasks, there is no need to hire a licensed home health care nurse. In order to be certified as a registered nurse, the home health nurse must obtain a licensed. They can only acquire a licensed by completing a program and getting a degree in nursing. The most popular and most highly skilled nursing program is the 4 year BSN (Bachelor’s Degree) in nursing program. For this nurse there is a high demand. There is also the 2 year program (ADN or Associates Degree in Nursing. The home health care nurse can also take nursing training in a hospital setting. Upon completion of one of these three programs, the nurse can get certification form the National Association for Home Health Care. Sometimes a family can save money by hiring both an aide and a nurse. A home health aide can take care of custodial care matters that do not require the education of a skilled professional. Along with this health care aide , the family can hire a home health care nurse to come in and out for brief visits to administer medicine, change dressing on a patient’s wound, give advice, and take care of matters which require skill that an aide does possess. Elderly and other patients feel safer in the privacy of their own home. A familiar environment may help their condition or at least give them comfort during their illness period whether it be terminal or whether it is merely for recuperation from a lengthy illness or surgery. For many reasons and for many families a home health care nurse is the right avenue to pursue.
