For Those Considering Home Health Care

When home health care is mentioned, what often comes to mind is the senior citizen.  Certainly senior care is one aspect of the home health care profession.  There are times when children need medical care and supervision at home too.  They can use health care attention at home after being released from the hospital due to serious illness.

There are skills and techniques which can not be provided by the family members without assistance.  Professionals such as home health care assistants, respiratory and physical therapists, and of course, doctors opinions, and the help of nurses are needed as part of the team to make sure that the family is well capable of caring for the child at home.

The best thing to do is to begin learning the different needs of the child before he is released from the hospital.  Pay attention to the professional caregivers as they work with your child.  Learn how they use different medical machinery and equipment need for treatment and remember that people learn by asking questions.  What you don’t learn by observing just ask about.  Learn about the different equipment which is to be used such as various types of tubes like catheters or nasogastric tubes.  Your child may need the assistance of a breathing machine or suction equipment depending on the nature of the illness.

Nursing assistants are available for hire to families of home health care patients.  Make sure that you check around before hiring a home health care assistant.  The agency that is used should be a reputable one.  Spend time talking with the health care assistant before hiring them.  Be sure to find out from your team of professionals what questions to ask.

In order to care for your child at home you will need to have knowledge of your child’s illness.  When problems come up you should know how to take care of them, or how to handle emergency situations and when to notify professional help if the situation becomes critical.

If you have around the clock caregivers for your child it is best to make sure that each shift is in sync with each other.  If no communication exists between the caregivers of your child, critical mistakes can be made which can cause severe medical situations to arise.

Being a family member and caregiver of  a home bound child patient you should be able o recognize when certain things are unusual such as the child’s appearance and demeanor.  Notify other health care team members of these changes so that the child can be monitored.

Hospitals do have social workers who are available to help you with getting in touch with a home health care team such as the therapist and home health care assistant.  The social worker may also be able to assist you in choosing which type of requirements that your health care assistant needs to possess.

As a family caregiver of a home health care patient, always be ready with emergency numbers in case of critical situations.
